Dawn Ellis, Esq.
I am a Florida resident since 1974 and received my bachelor's degree in psychology in 1990 (magna cum laude) from the University of South Florida and my law degree from Stetson University in 1996. I am a past-president of the Citrus County Bar Association. The rest of my time and focus is on my family, which includes my husband and three children. We live in a small community on the west coast of Florida.
I began practicing in the area of estate planning in 1996 and 1997, then in 1998 I joined with another attorney and handled both estate planning and probate cases until 2004 when I opened My Florida Probate, P.A. From the outset, My Florida Probate, P.A., was designed to enable me to practice primarily as a Florida probate attorney and to focus my practice on uncontested cases throughout the entire state of Florida.
As a Florida probate attorney, I understand the confusion people face when contemplating the probate process and the hiring of a Florida probate attorney. There can be far more questions than answers when starting out and trying to understand the intricacies of probate law can be daunting. My approach in working with prospective clients is first to gather enough information to determine whether probate is necessary (after all, whenever possible the first objective is to avoid probate altogether). Second, if probate is required, my goal is to provide a prospective client with the information and answers they need to deal with current estate issues or problems, to evaluate the types of probate that may be available, and to provide the related Florida probate attorney’s fees and costs.
I practice probate law in every county in the state of Florida, not just the county I am located in, which is Citrus County. Citrus County is only a small part of my practice. I have opened and closed probate cases in 63 counties in Florida in the last 14 years. Many Florida probate attorneys will not practice outside the county in which they are located in. The reason I can handle probate cases in the entire state is because I only take on “uncontested” probate cases. I don’t take on cases that appear they may result in litigation or a fight with interested parties. Where a probate case has contested issues from the outset, I can recommend a Florida probate attorney that handles contested probate issues. Otherwise, as long as the case does not have any potential litigation issues, neither you nor I will have to appear in court. Uncontested probate can be handled entirely through the mail with the court and I work with my clients primarily through phone, fax, email and mail. This is a significant benefit to clients who are not located in Florida or in the county where the probate is being opened, and themselves have busy schedules.
